Segmented Woodturning – Finishing the Vase of Walnut & Maple

Segmented Woodturning – Applying the Wood Finish

Segmented woodturning - wood finish appliedThe segmented woodturning, a vase of walnut and maple is mounted to the lathe chuck of the wood lathe. In this case the vase already has a preliminary coat of Sealcoat sanding sealer. It also has a coat of Arm-R-Seal gloss finish. The next step calls for a light sanding with 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper. Then all the dust will be removed with a microfiber cloth so that an application of Arm-R-Seal satin finish can be wiped on and evenly distributed while the wood lathe is turning at a low speed. Allow the wood finish to dry in a dust free area. Repeat this process until you are satisfied with the wood finish. Also, make sure to dispose of any potentially flammable rags  in an appropriate manner.

Note:

Otherwise, the cloth could be grabbed by the spinning lathe chuck. For the same reason, it is also very important to use caution when applying the finish near the mouth opening of the vase. To avoid any chance of spontaneous combustion in the woodworking shop, remember to safely dispose of any and all rags containing flammable substances.

A turned segmented vase on a wood lathe - segmented woodturning

Working on the wood lathe with a segmented woodturning such as this polychromatic vase is an exhilarating experience  for a woodturner. Lathe tools shape the segmented rings of cherry, maple, and walnut and this along with sanding creates a smooth surface for this woodturning project. To create an even smoother surface the wood turner can grab some of the wood shavings and carefully hold it against the segmented woodturning project thus creating a burnished surface.

Once the segmented woodturning is completely sanded and burnished the dust will be completely blown away with the aid of an air compressor. A wood finish will then be applied to the vase while the wood lathe is turning at a slow rpm.

Remember to always be careful around the wood lathe while it is turning wood. Make sure you don’t have any loose clothing, jewelry, hair, etc. that can suddenly be caught by the spinning lathe. Safety first always!
