Segmented woodturning, Vase of maple & walnut...416 segments - segmented woodturning

The segmented woodturning is a vase that is 6” x 9” and has 14 rings for a total of 416 segments. For the finish it has Sealcoat shellac sealer, a coat of Arm-R-Seal gloss, & numerous coats of Arm-R-Seal satin.

The pattern of this segmented woodturning was inspired by the vases created by Lincoln Seitzman.

Segmented Woodturning Mortising the Base

Segmented Woodturning – Mortising the Base

Segmented woodturning:

This segmented woodturning video tutorial focuses on mortising the base on the wood lathe. Eventually, this section will be reversed and the mortise being made will provide a dovetail-like opening that the jaws of the lathe chuck will grip. In the woodworking video you will notice how a dial caliper is used for measuring the accuracy of the desired depth of cut for the mortise.

Segmented Woodturning - 3 sections of a wooden vaseThere are three sections of the segmented vase. Ultimately, all 3 sections of the segmented woodturning will be glued together to form a vase that will be 9″ x 12″ when finished. There are 18 rings and 24 segments in each ring.  (432 total segments in this segmented woodturning.)

Segmented Woodturning – Finishing the Vase of Walnut & Maple

Segmented Woodturning – Applying the Wood Finish

Segmented woodturning - wood finish appliedThe segmented woodturning, a vase of walnut and maple is mounted to the lathe chuck of the wood lathe. In this case the vase already has a preliminary coat of Sealcoat sanding sealer. It also has a coat of Arm-R-Seal gloss finish. The next step calls for a light sanding with 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper. Then all the dust will be removed with a microfiber cloth so that an application of Arm-R-Seal satin finish can be wiped on and evenly distributed while the wood lathe is turning at a low speed. Allow the wood finish to dry in a dust free area. Repeat this process until you are satisfied with the wood finish. Also, make sure to dispose of any potentially flammable rags  in an appropriate manner.

Note:

Segmented woodturning - vase with wood finishDuring this finishing operation of the segmented woodturning, it is imperative to be safe and keep the wiping cloth away from the lathe chuck. Otherwise, the cloth could be grabbed by the spinning lathe chuck. For the same reason, it is also very important to use caution when applying the finish near the mouth opening of the vase. To avoid any chance of spontaneous combustion in the woodworking shop, remember to safely dispose of any and all rags containing flammable substances.

Perhaps the preparation for the segmented woodturning pictured above looks a bit like a wooden pineapple, but trust me it will look a whole lot different as you will soon see.  There are 14 rings to this vase and a total of 416 wood segments that are carefully fit and glued together using Titebond 2 yellow glue.

If the segmented woodturning that will become a vase is going to hold water for flowers, then an opening is necessary. As you can see a 1-7/8″ forstner bit is being used to drill out an opening to allow for a glass vial to be inserted. For this woodboring operation it is essential to ensure that segmented woodturning and the forstner bit are inline and centered with one another.

The vase of maple and walnut measures 5-1/2″ x 9″. the segmented woodturning been through a lot lately as it’s been spinning at 800 rpm and being shaped by turning gouges during the previous 20 minutes. Here you see it resting on the bed of the wood lathe as it catches its breath and awaits the sanding stage. The wooden vase will be remounted to the lathe chuck for final sanding and finishing. The expandable lathe chuck has dovetail – like jaws  which will securely grip the circular mortise within the turning’s base.
