Diamond Wood Inlay Banding

 Diamond Wood Inlay Banding

Part 2

Shop-made Wood Inlay Banding

Diamond wood inlay bandingWood inlay banding with the diamond pattern can be made in the woodworking shop. However, up to now there has been little if any information available on how to make wood inlay banding with the diamond pattern. (You can read all about making diamond wood inlay banding using techniques that I have developed and have written about in a previous article on this blog.) This pattern is very distinctive and can embellish a number of woodworking projects from picture frames, jewelry boxes, to a whole host of furniture pieces. It would work very well as an accent for a table top border. It could also be employed into a number of arts and crafts style pieces. How the diamond wood inlay banding is applied is simply up to the imagination of the woodworker.

Wood Inlay Strips of 3/32″

Diamond wood inlay banding picture frameWood inlay banding that is created in my shop is made to a uniform thickness of 3/32″. This operation is performed on the band saw. These veneer strips are then glued and inlaid into dadoes that are 1/16″ deep. I prefer to keep 1/32″ of the wood inlay banding above the project’s surface. Once the white glue cures, then the inlay banding can be leveled by scraping and sanding. The woodworker just needs to be careful so not to sand through the veneer.

Centering the Banding

Diamond wood inlay banding picture frameBe sure to give some thought to the layout of the diamond wood inlay banding prior to adding glue. For example, it is a good idea to center the wood inlay banding on every side of the picture frame. Doing so will give the wood inlay a symmetrical and pleasing appearance.

Finish Work Methods for Lasting Beauty

Finish Work Methods Include Surface Preparation

Completed Cosmati Picture Frame - Finish Work MethodsFinish work methods can make all the difference in a woodworker’s project. One of the major challenges for the beginning woodworker, intermediate woodworker, or even an experienced longtime woodworker can be the ability to achieve a satisfactory wood finish. Surface preparation is a key ingredient to achieving the desired results. In this woodworking article we will focus on these important woodworking skills. These finish work methods include the use of a card scraper and also the use of sandpaper with a sanding block.

The Value of Using a Card Scraper

Cosmati Picture Frame - Finish Work Methods - Card ScraperWhy include the card scraper in the finish work methods? The card scraper gives the woodworker a controlled way of leveling the surface of his woodworking project. In the woodworking video, the woodworker uses the card scraper to level the decorative wood inlay banding to the surface of the picture frame. Not only is the woodworker taking thin shavings off of the banding, he is also cleaning up all the glue lines and any excess glue that may be on the surface. It is critically important to remove this dried glue prior to applying the finish. If not removed, the glue will stick out like a sore thumb once the chosen finish is applied. So, it is imperative that we take care of that now before it becomes an issue.

Control the Wood Being Removed

Another important reason the card scraper is included in these finish work methods is because the decorative wood inlay banding is of only 3/32″ thick and the banding is inlaid and glued into a shallow depth of a 1/16″ dado. The card scraper allows the woodworker to remove thin shavings of wood at this time while eliminating the need for any heavy sanding. In this way the woodworker can carefully control the amount of material being removed. We definitely want to make sure that the inlay banding is not sanded through.

Why Sand with a Sanding Block?

Cosmati Picture Frame - Finish Work Methods Sandpaper is used with a sanding block. This woodworking technique allows for the woodworker to comfortably grip the sandpaper. This method also provides the woodworker with a great means for applying an even pressure to the picture frame surface. Keep in mind that we are looking for a smooth, flat surface for our woodworking project.  Depending on how well the work is performed with the card scraper and the type of wood being used for the project, it is likely that the initial sanding can begin with 100 to 200 grit sandpaper. In the case of this picture frame, the woodworker continued to prepare the wood surface up to 400 grit sandpaper.

How to Check for Glue Stain

A portion of the finish work methods includes applying a small amount of paint thinner to a rag and then applying it to the picture frame. Why is this an important element of the finish work methods? There are two parts to this answer. The wiping of the woodworking project with paint thinner helps to clean up any sawdust that may remain from the sanding. This cleaning technique will also show us any glue that may may be left on the surface of our project. If we see any glue stain showing at this time, we still have some more work to do before we apply the wood finish. If any glue stain remains, we need to remove it with further sanding.

Sanding Sealer, Cherry Wood, and Blotching

These finish work methods lead us up to the important moment of applying the finish. In the case of the woodworker’s picture frame, he chose to apply a coat of sanding sealer to the cherry picture frame. Cherry is prone to blotching and the sealer will help to remedy this issue.

Applying the Lacquer

Cosmati Picture frame 086After the sanding sealer has been applied and given time to adequately dry, it is time to perform a light sanding. This sanding will help by giving the surface some “tooth.” In other words, when the lacquer is sprayed onto the freshly sanded surface, the lacquer will have a good surface to adhere to. (Be sure to remove any and all sanding dust prior to applying the lacquer.) The woodworker can then proceed to build up layers of lacquer to achieve a desirable wood finish for his or her woodworking project.

Card Scraper for Wood Inlay Bandings

Card Scraper for a Smooth Surface

Card Scraper: An Inexpensive  Tool of Great Value

A card scraper is an inexpensive tool of flat steel. It is about the size of a index card and is used by the woodworker in the woodworking shop. The edges of this tool are polished and then a burnisher is used at an angle to produce a burr. This burr actually forms a hook. To use the card scraper hold each end with your fingers while pressing forward with both thumbs. This will cause the card scraper to flex. Tilt the scraper forward slightly to begin scraping with the flexed portion of the scraper. One beauty of the card scraper is that the woodworker can utilize the full length of the hooked edge. When that edge dulls, simply flip the card over and use another sharp edge. Each of the two length will have two hooked edges.

The Card Scraper is Often Overlooked

Cosmati Picture Frames - Before Card Scraper UsageThis great hand tool is often overlooked and yet it can help one to produce excellent results for one’s woodworking projects. It takes just a little time to understand how the card scraper is sharpened. However, once you learn how to sharpen one you will be well on your way. (The photo at left was taken prior to using a card scraper.)

Prepare for the Finish

The card scraper can greatly assist the woodworker when preparing the woodworking project for finish. The card scraper will save one from a lot of heavy sanding to remove milling marks, excess glue squeeze out, and rasp marks. Many woodworkers will generally take a power sander with a heavy grit to remove these marks and then progress to finer grit sandpaper. However, a woodworker can eliminate a lot of the heavy sanding by using the card scraper.

A Card Scraper Offers Control

Cosmati Picture Frames - After Card Scraper UsageIn the case of working with 3/32″ wood inlay bandings, a card scraper offers the woodworker a great deal of control. The scraper works well with wood segments of varying grain directions where tear out is a major concern. Some may be tempted to use hand planes, a planer, or power sander to level the wood surface. However, there is always the chance of bringing the surface too low thus ruining the wood inlay banding.  Try using a card scraper and then a finer grit sandpaper to prepare for your choice of wood finish. (The photo at the left was taken after using a card scraper.)

What’s the Best Glue to Use?

How to Glue Wood Inlay Banding - Segments for the Diamond PatternThe best glue adhesive based upon my experience for how to glue wood inlay banding is Elmer’s glue all. This white glue has a longer “open time” before it starts to set up. This is very helpful when working with a lot of wood segments and when a woodworker is trying to arrange and secure the pattern of wood inlay banding. This white glue is also a strong wood glue when gluing wood to wood.

.

Another Choice for Wood Adhesive

How to Glue Wood Inlay Bandings - Diamond Inlay BandingTitebond yellow glue is also a good choice of wood adhesive. Just keep in mind, the woodworker may have figure out how to glue wood quickly. This can depend on factors like temperature, humidity, and the complexity of the wood inlay banding patterns.

An Important Tip & Technique for Gluing Wood Inlay Banding

How to Glue Wood Inlay Banding - Painters Tape Secures the Alignment of Wooden SegmentsHere’s a woodworking tip for how to glue wood inlay banding. Clamp a straight board to the laminate surface of the work area. (Remove this straight edge immediately after the wood inlay banding is clamped. Otherwise it could be glued to the project. Keep in mind that blue tape, clear packing tape, or a coating of wax can be applied to the straight edge to protect it from becoming glued.)

The next step is to apply blue painters tape in a manner that will secure the alignment of the wood segments to be first laid down. Use a combination square to create a 90 degree angle with the straight edge of the board and the first segment. Be sure to press the wooden segment down firmly on the blue painters tape. Now it is just a matter of carefully arranging the following segments in place.

Be Prepared for the Glue Up

How to Glue Wood Inlay Banding - Clamps & a Wood Caul Apply Even PressureWhen learning how to glue wood inlay bandings, it is wise to be prepared. Have the necessary clamps, cauls, wood inlay banding materials, glue, glue brushes, blue tape, glue applicators, and paper towels readily available. Remember, it is always a great idea to perform a “dry run” first just to make sure.

.

Work on a Non-Stick Surface

How to Glue Wood Inlay Banding - Wooden segments are laid out for a Dry RunWoodworkers will notice that a laminate surface is being used. This type of surface works well during the glue up as it is flat and resistant to the drying glue. It is also easy to clean off any excess glue with a scraper when preparing for the following glue-up.

Woodturning How to Video – Wood Turn a Segmented Knob on a Wood Lathe

Woodturning How To Video – Wood Turn a Segmented Knob

Woodturning how to video - segmented woodturning - turned knob with tenonThis woodturning how to video shows how to wood turn a segmented knob on a wood lathe using basic turning tools. In this woodturning project a parting tool, roughing gouge, and spindle gouge with a fingernail grind were used to wood turn the glue up. The woods used for the glue up were hard maple and African mahogany.

Woodturning how to video - segmented woodturning blockThe YouTube woodturning how to video shows a woodturner tightening the segmented glue up into the lathe chuck and then turning a tenon. The tenon is then reversed and tightened within the lathe chuck so that the woodturner can woodturn the main body. Notice how the designs in wood appear as the woodturning takes shape.

.

Woodturning how to video - tenonA star pattern of maple emerges in the woodturning how to video as the woodturning project progresses. Watch how the  two laminated woods contrast one another as the woodturner rounds out the knob. Since the star pattern is solid throughout the wooden block, the white tips of the maple star appear as white lines between the arched African mahogany on the outside perimeter of the segmented woodturning.

.

Woodturning how to video - Segmented woodturningVarious grits of sandpaper are used to sand and smooth the wooden project of the woodturning how to video. The woodturner starts with 120 grit and progresses to 320 grit wet & dry sandpaper. Afterwards, the woodturning project is nice and smooth to the touch.

.

Woodturning how to video - Segmented woodturningFinally, the woodturning how to video shows how a wood finish of Tried and True varnish oil finish is applied. The lathe chuck still has a firm grip on the tenon, the wood lathe is turned on, and the finish is a applied using a paper towel. Only a small amount of the oil finish is necessary for a few reasons. The oil varnish simply goes a long way and the segmented woodturning is small. Also, the woodturner wants to avoid any splatter of oil as it is applied to the woodturning project. For this reason it is still a very good idea to work safe and always wear a faceshield during the application of the wood finish.
