Shop-made Wood Inlay Banding

Diamond wood inlay bandingWood inlay banding with the diamond pattern can be made in the woodworking shop. However, up to now there has been little if any information available on how to make wood inlay banding with the diamond pattern. (You can read all about making diamond wood inlay banding using techniques that I have developed and have written about in a previous article on this blog.) This pattern is very distinctive and can embellish a number of woodworking projects from picture frames, jewelry boxes, to a whole host of furniture pieces. It would work very well as an accent for a table top border. It could also be employed into a number of arts and crafts style pieces. How the diamond wood inlay banding is applied is simply up to the imagination of the woodworker.

Wood Inlay Strips of 3/32″

Diamond wood inlay banding picture frameWood inlay banding that is created in my shop is made to a uniform thickness of 3/32″. This operation is performed on the band saw. These veneer strips are then glued and inlaid into dadoes that are 1/16″ deep. I prefer to keep 1/32″ of the wood inlay banding above the project’s surface. Once the white glue cures, then the inlay banding can be leveled by scraping and sanding. The woodworker just needs to be careful so not to sand through the veneer.

Centering the Banding

Diamond wood inlay banding picture frameBe sure to give some thought to the layout of the diamond wood inlay banding prior to adding glue. For example, it is a good idea to center the wood inlay banding on every side of the picture frame. Doing so will give the wood inlay a symmetrical and pleasing appearance.

Card Scraper for Wood Inlay Bandings

Card Scraper for a Smooth Surface

Card Scraper: An Inexpensive  Tool of Great Value

A card scraper is an inexpensive tool of flat steel. It is about the size of a index card and is used by the woodworker in the woodworking shop. The edges of this tool are polished and then a burnisher is used at an angle to produce a burr. This burr actually forms a hook. To use the card scraper hold each end with your fingers while pressing forward with both thumbs. This will cause the card scraper to flex. Tilt the scraper forward slightly to begin scraping with the flexed portion of the scraper. One beauty of the card scraper is that the woodworker can utilize the full length of the hooked edge. When that edge dulls, simply flip the card over and use another sharp edge. Each of the two length will have two hooked edges.

The Card Scraper is Often Overlooked

Cosmati Picture Frames - Before Card Scraper UsageThis great hand tool is often overlooked and yet it can help one to produce excellent results for one’s woodworking projects. It takes just a little time to understand how the card scraper is sharpened. However, once you learn how to sharpen one you will be well on your way. (The photo at left was taken prior to using a card scraper.)

Prepare for the Finish

The card scraper can greatly assist the woodworker when preparing the woodworking project for finish. The card scraper will save one from a lot of heavy sanding to remove milling marks, excess glue squeeze out, and rasp marks. Many woodworkers will generally take a power sander with a heavy grit to remove these marks and then progress to finer grit sandpaper. However, a woodworker can eliminate a lot of the heavy sanding by using the card scraper.

A Card Scraper Offers Control

Cosmati Picture Frames - After Card Scraper UsageIn the case of working with 3/32″ wood inlay bandings, a card scraper offers the woodworker a great deal of control. The scraper works well with wood segments of varying grain directions where tear out is a major concern. Some may be tempted to use hand planes, a planer, or power sander to level the wood surface. However, there is always the chance of bringing the surface too low thus ruining the wood inlay banding.  Try using a card scraper and then a finer grit sandpaper to prepare for your choice of wood finish. (The photo at the left was taken after using a card scraper.)

The Art of Wood Inlay Banding

The Art of Wood Inlay Banding

Cosmati Design - The Art of Wood Inlay BandingThe art of wood inlay banding is a lost art. While many people are thrilled to see furniture, jewelry boxes, and pictures frames adorned with wood inlay banding, the truth is, very few woodworkers know how to make their own decorative wood inlay banding. Yes, of course a woodworker can inlay a simple strip of contrasting wood to accent a wood project. However, the focus of this woodworking article is the art of wood inlay banding. So, let’s look at some examples of wood inlay banding made in the woodworking shop by fellow woodworkers.

What’s the Best Glue to Use?

How to Glue Wood Inlay Banding - Segments for the Diamond PatternThe best glue adhesive based upon my experience for how to glue wood inlay banding is Elmer’s glue all. This white glue has a longer “open time” before it starts to set up. This is very helpful when working with a lot of wood segments and when a woodworker is trying to arrange and secure the pattern of wood inlay banding. This white glue is also a strong wood glue when gluing wood to wood.

.

Another Choice for Wood Adhesive

How to Glue Wood Inlay Bandings - Diamond Inlay BandingTitebond yellow glue is also a good choice of wood adhesive. Just keep in mind, the woodworker may have figure out how to glue wood quickly. This can depend on factors like temperature, humidity, and the complexity of the wood inlay banding patterns.

An Important Tip & Technique for Gluing Wood Inlay Banding

How to Glue Wood Inlay Banding - Painters Tape Secures the Alignment of Wooden SegmentsHere’s a woodworking tip for how to glue wood inlay banding. Clamp a straight board to the laminate surface of the work area. (Remove this straight edge immediately after the wood inlay banding is clamped. Otherwise it could be glued to the project. Keep in mind that blue tape, clear packing tape, or a coating of wax can be applied to the straight edge to protect it from becoming glued.)

The next step is to apply blue painters tape in a manner that will secure the alignment of the wood segments to be first laid down. Use a combination square to create a 90 degree angle with the straight edge of the board and the first segment. Be sure to press the wooden segment down firmly on the blue painters tape. Now it is just a matter of carefully arranging the following segments in place.

Be Prepared for the Glue Up

How to Glue Wood Inlay Banding - Clamps & a Wood Caul Apply Even PressureWhen learning how to glue wood inlay bandings, it is wise to be prepared. Have the necessary clamps, cauls, wood inlay banding materials, glue, glue brushes, blue tape, glue applicators, and paper towels readily available. Remember, it is always a great idea to perform a “dry run” first just to make sure.

.

Work on a Non-Stick Surface

How to Glue Wood Inlay Banding - Wooden segments are laid out for a Dry RunWoodworkers will notice that a laminate surface is being used. This type of surface works well during the glue up as it is flat and resistant to the drying glue. It is also easy to clean off any excess glue with a scraper when preparing for the following glue-up.

Woodworking  How to – Make Diamond Wood Inlay Banding

(The 90 Degree Pattern)

Woodworking how to make Diamond Wood Inlay Banding - 90 degreesThis woodworking how to project features band saw methods and workshop techniques to make beautiful diamond wood inlay banding.  The making of wood inlay bandings is a lost art. It is the goal of  The Apprentice and The Journeyman to raise awareness to fellow woodworkers and artisans of these methods and techniques used to make fantastic designs of wood inlay banding.

Download this Diamond Wood Inlay Banding Pattern at the SketchUp Warehouse.

The Three Components of the Wood Design

Woodworking how to make Diamond Wood Inlay BandingThe 90 degree diamond wood inlay banding is the focus of this article and YouTube woodworking video. The inlay pattern for this banding consists of three components; a square, a 45 – 45 – 90 triangle, and the outer veneers. The square component is of mahogany. The triangle includes a top and bottom strip of maple with a strip of walnut at the center. The contrasting outer veneers are of maple and walnut as well.

The Band Saw – The Power Tool of Choice

Woodworking how to rip Diamond Wood Inlay BandingThe Band Saw is the stationary power tool of choice for this woodworking how to project. As you can see in the video clips, The Apprentice and The Journeyman has developed band saw cross cut sleds specifically for cutting the angles of the segments. Stop blocks are clamped to the fence of these sleds to provide for accurate and uniform segment lengths. This is method is conducive to making a quality and uniform wood design  throughout our diamond wood inlay banding.

The Apprentice and The Journeyman has also developed a quality method for cutting thin strips on the band saw by incorporating an adjustable Rockler thin rip jig with a roller bearing.

Woodworking how to Determine Segment  Sizing

Woodworking how to measure thickness - Diamond Wood Inlay BandingTo begin, our material for our woodworking how to project is first dimensioned. The square component is nestled within the triangle components at a 45 degree angle. We use a dial caliper to measure the square across its longest points. We then divide that measurement in half to determine the height of our triangles. Simply put, the triangles are 1/2 the height of the square from its two longest points.

The Grain Direction of the Diamond Wood Inlay Pattern

Woodworking how to glue & clamp Diamond Wood Inlay BandingYou will notice in the woodworking how to video that our finished diamond wood inlay banding “log” is about 2 ” wide. (14 thin strips of 3/32″ x 3/4″ x 24″wood inlay bandings were able to be harvested from the banding “log.”) The diamond wood inlay banding design is without end grain. Initial planning and some thought prior to cutting material is important to achieve a design that consists only of long grain and is void of any end grain.
